this is from one of the "gurus" who was at Tech's Pro Day his weekend...a tidbit about JHam

this is pay material but figured yall would like to know about his draft stock

Here's what I've been able to gather from VT's Pro Day:

James Anderson

Justin Hamilton: had everybody talking about him. Healthy and put on an unexpected show. Vertical jump of 42 inches blew the scouts away. Had a 10' 8" standing broad jump. This kid is exactly what the NFL wants, extremely bright, versatile and won't come with an unrealistic price tag. May have worked himself into being selected in the draft.

Jimmy Martin (Worked, but was limited with injury)

Jonathan Lewis

Tim Sandidge

Will Montgomery: looked good in drills. Had a great combine, so didn't do a lot.

Jeff King: Ran a 4.75 forty. Says that's about as good as he can do. Caught everything thrown at him.

Cedric Humes

Mike Imoh

Darryl Tapp: looked very quick. Worked out at Linebacker and defensive end.

Reggie Butler

Chris Clifton

Jimmy Williams: one scout said he's the best defensive back he's seen in three years. Don't be surprised if Jimmy is a Top 10 pick. Blew the scouts away with his forty. The NFL scouts timed him at 4.37 in Tech's field house. Big, strong, hits and fast. He won't be on the board long. Made himself a boat load of money.

Marcus Vick: incredibly accurate. Threw the football great. High velocity on his throws

i heard from a very reliable source that justin blew the scouts away. outperformed jimmy williams in all categories except the 40. scouts said he would go no lower than 5th round, and now that everybody is aware of his versatility and athleticism, would more than likely go higher. he`s a hard worker...hope it pays off.

he did do a very good job at the pro day...but he did not outperform Jimmy Williams...Jimmy is a high first round draft pick for a reason

But what would he be drafted as? Would go as a Safety, Reciever, or what?

that's why he could be a commodity...he can do all of the above and play special teams

he is a safety and a safety only, nfl teams only have a 53 man roster, they dont have guys that "just play special teams". Even the best special teams players have a position. If he isnt drafted as a safety he wont be drafted.

a lot of people help their draft stock b/c they can play special teams as well...teams get more play out of them for their money

he can play safety, he can play wr, whatever position someone wants to place him at...he could bulk up and play some OLB in some defenses

I only see him as a Strong Safety, thats all Im saying. I dont think hes as versatile as others may think. Most 2 way players are corners/wide receivers. You dont hear of a safety playing wide receiver. He may could play outside linebacker but in this day in age, there are alot more defensive ends switching to outside linebacker and outside linebackers switching to strong safety(michael boulware). I just feel that hes a strong safety or he isnt anything.

alot of NFL players get quality game time and have long careers playing on special teams only. Tech has a bunch doing that now- Nick Sorenson, Willie Pyle, and Kevin McAdam just to name a few. all are "officially" DB's, but get most if not all of their playing time on special teams. Justin can be just as effective in the pros as those guys, if not more so because of his size (6'3 220), versatility (RB, WR, S, and special teams captain at Tech), and athleticism (42 inch vertical, 4.4 in the 40). like the scout said, the NFL loves players like that.

by the way, the info about Justin outperforming Jimmy Williams in everything but the 40 came from someone who was actually there watching the tryouts. Williams will probably be a top 10 pick at cornerback. most of the good cover corners in the NFL are relatively small, poor tacklers, and not very aggressive against the run- but they can fly. Williams, however, does it all- that`s why the NFL is salivating over him. Justin is a different type of player- a pure Safety, big and smart on reads. he`s not a one-on-one cover guy, and he`s not a burner. that`s the difference between him and Williams, as well as the difference between the 1st and 4th round in the draft.
